Abhay Singh (IND) beat [8] 3-0 Ben Coates (ENG) | 11-3, 11-2, 11-7 | 25 mins
Abhay Singh won the first game 11-3, with a signature feather-touch boast taxing Ben Coates on a few of those eleven lost rallies. The second game began with Coates starting strong, forcing Singh into all four corners of the court. But low and behold, no sooner had Coates started to get Singh running all over before Singh threw in one of his trusty little boasts. This, followed by a few errors from Coates, resulted in a quick 10-1 lead by Singh, and in turn to an 11-2 second game. Coates seemed to have some pain in his right calf, but yet managed to make Singh work harder than the previous two games before the latter finally closed at 11-7, sealing his victory.

The battle was quick to begin and the Wolverine in each of the players was quick to break out their claws. Dramatic, right? Good.There is always that one match, the one that goes all the way to five games, and the referee might as well have a racquet in hand and be on court playing as well. The scores in the very first game did not lie, as each number did not shy away from hugging the other. One Indian, one Spaniard. One in blue, one in orange. First of all, show of hands if you think—oh no, don’t you dare put your hand up. It’s on the list of the many things that led to many of those dramatic player-referee moments… the opening of the door. Cornes won the first two games, but by no means were these easy, being 11-8 and 11-9. Jagtap then put up a valiant effort to win the next two games, winning them 8-11 and 10-12. Jagtap stayed strong through the latter halves of each of these games, which allowed him to force mistakes from Cornes. The fifth game saw the scoreboard swing back and forth like a pendulum, but it was Cornes who finally emerged the victor at 15-13, terminating the 89 minute encounter and disappointing the largely Indian crowd gathered outside.

Some of Creed’s shots were so close to the wall, he might as well have tattooed them there. Creed made sure to make Downer chase down each shot, and though Downer managed to pick them up, he was unable to do so while also putting Creed in any real danger. In the third game, Downer managed to bring his score up to 6-10, but Creed forced a final mistake from Downer to take the match in a convincing 11-4, 11-2, 11-6 victory.
